Postdoc and PhD positions at TU Kaiserslautern in experimental solid-state magnetism

In the working group Applied Spin Phenomena (Department of Physics, Technical University Kaiserslautern, Germany), a postdoc and a PhD positions are immediately available in the field of magnonics.

The working group focusses on the experimental investigation of spin-dynamic phenomena. We employ advanced microwave and optical spectroscopy tools and investigate magnonic devices made from ferromagnets, chiral magnets, antiferromagnets and magnetic heterostructures. We are particularly interested in controlling magnons by their interactions with surface acoustic waves.

We offer a welcoming and productive work environment with laboratories that define the state-of-the-art in spin dynamic spectroscopy. Our laboratories and offices are located in the brand-new research building “Laboratory for Advanced Spin Engineering (LASE)” on the campus of TU Kaiserslautern. The Nanostructuring Center in LASE provides our leading tools for nanolithography. The physics department of TU Kaiserslautern hosts several coordinated research programs as well as programs for individual scientific excellence.

Postdoc Position

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who joins our group as a senior scientist to support our activities in the framework of our ERC consolidator grant “Magneto-acoustic waves in complex spin systems” (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101044526). The candidate needs to have a background in the field of experimental solid-state magnetism. We are looking for a candidate who has previously worked with at least one of the following methods: a) Spectroscopy of spin dynamics in antiferromagnets, ferromagnets and/or chiral magnets. b) Independently maintaining and operating thin-film deposition tools (molecular beam epitaxy, sputtering and/or electron-beam evaporation) for magnetic and/or piezoelectric films c) Surface acoustic wave device design and spectroscopy.

The candidate will be responsible for coordinating research activities within a project team consisting of PhD, master, and bachelor students. We thus expect the willingness and ability to guide and co-supervise students and doctoral candidates. Moreover, the candidate will take responsibility for at least one experimental setup, such as: Magneto-optic spin-wave spectroscopy (Brillouin light scattering, time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect), magnet cryostat (magnetotransport, low-temperature magneto-optics), microwave spectroscopy (broadband magnetic resonance, surface acoustic wave spectroscopy, cavity-based FMR), thin-film MBE cluster.

Candidates need a PhD degree in physics and proficiency in either English or German language. Non-native speakers should include language certificates with their application. We expect that the candidate has previously published as first-author in leading scientific journals and commands the written English language at a high level. The candidate should have at least 3 years of working experience in a lab environment, typically obtained during PhD work in experimental physics.

Applications from qualified female scientists are particularly encouraged.

Motivated candidates, who would like to join our group should send inquiries or their application including a curriculum vitae, transcript of records, list of publications, copy of PhD certificate (or statement about anticipated successful completion of PhD by the supervisor), a summary of their PhD thesis work and at least one letter of recommendation to Prof. Dr. Mathias Weiler (weiler@physik.uni-kl.de). More information about the group is available at https://www.physik.uni-kl.de/en/weiler. The position is available immediately and open until filled. The position offers salary equivalent to TVL E13 and is initially available for 2 years with possibility for extension. The successful candidate may qualify for a research program to establish an independent junior research group at TU Kaiserslautern.

PhD Position

We are looking for a PhD student who joins our group as a scientific coworker to support our activities in the framework of our ERC consolidator grant “Magneto-acoustic waves in complex spin systems” (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101044526). The candidate is expected to have a background in the field of experimental magnetism and experience in studying spin dynamic phenomena is desired. Previous experience with Brillouin light scattering, broadband magnetic resonance spectroscopy, spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance, surface acoustic wave spectroscopy or related techniques is advantageous.

Candidates need a master or diploma degree in physics or a related subject. We expect proficiency in either English or German language and ability to write scientific publications in English. Non-native speakers should include language certificates with their application.

Applications from qualified female scientists are particularly encouraged.

Motivated candidates, who would like to join our group should send inquiries or their application including a curriculum vitae, transcript of records, a summary of their master/diploma thesis work and at least one letter of recommendation to Prof. Dr. Mathias Weiler (weiler@physik.uni-kl.de). More information about the group is available at https://www.physik.uni-kl.de/en/weiler. The position offers salary equivalent to 75% TVL E13 and is available for a duration of 3 years with possibility for extension. The position is available immediately and open until filled.
